Fuzzy Electoral Math Gets A Little Clearer

Earlier this week, I wrote a piece about the potential impact of California moving its primary up in the electoral calendar. In this piece, I mentioned that there were several other states currently considering moving their primaries up.

Scratch "considering" and make that "finalizing," at least for two big players.

On Wednesday, New York's legislature voted to move their primary up to February 5, 2008. It is expected that Governor Eliot Spitzer will sign this legislation into law.

Earlier today, I saw on CNN's news ticker that Florida's House of Representatives voted to move their primary date up to January 29, 2008, ahead of the forming "national primary" day on February 5, 2008 and the same day as South Carolina's primary.

All I know is that I wouldn't want to be a piece of office furniture in New Hampshire or South Carolina today, because I'm pretty sure there's a lot of it being thrown in anger and exasperation over being trumped by some of the nation's largest states.

On the Democratic side, I'm inclined to think that the more big states in the South that move up in the electoral calendar, the better John Edwards' prospects look. I think New York is clearly going to go to Clinton and Illinois, when it moves up, will clearly go to Obama. I think Florida could be a huge feather in Edwards' cap, and if the Florida Senate approves the January 29th date, Edwards could ride some serious Big Mo from South Carolina and Florida into February 5, 2008.

Next up: Texas moving up to February 5, 2008. HB 2017 and SB 1843 are the pertinent pieces of legislation to watch. It's coming, y'all.
