The Governor King of Texas

Legislature? Legislation? Who needs a legislative body and legislation when you have a governor king and executive orders? At least recently, it seems as though Governor Perry is operating within this distorted frame of mind.

Paul Burka documents one such example of Perry's "l'etat, c'est moi" approach to governing by his insisting university chancellors and presidents fall in lock step behind his higher education proposals. Failure to comply could result in Perry unleashing his marauding band of appointed regents to terminate university dissidents.

Some lawmakers are growing so concerned that they are seeking help from Attorney General Gregg Abbot. Senator Nelson (R - Lewisville) and Rep. Keffer (R - Eastland) are requesting an opinion by the Attorney General clarifying the governor's power with regard to issuing executive orders. No worries, I'm sure the governor king has our best interest in mind. Not TXU's, Mike Toomey's, Phil Gramm's, UBS's, Merck's, or Cintra's.
