Larry Craig and David Vitter, Cosponsors

What might Idaho Republican Larry Craig, he of the wide stance, and Louisiana Republican David Vitter, he of the brothel speed dial, be cosponsoring in the Senate?

A budget bill? A bill about Iraq? I know, maybe something about a new energy policy?

Nope.

Senators Craig and Vitter are cosponsors of Senate Joint Resolution 43, a resolution proposing a Marriage Protection Amendment to the Constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Priceless. With cosponsors like these, how can you lose?

*gigglesnort*

No religious institutions have any objections to this?

Spiritual Thinking Trumps Reason

These politicians have managed to assume the mantle of spiritual leadership in the eyes of many on the religious right.

Now, like so many Pastors before them, they can freely indulge in their private vices, and when caught, receive the forgiveness of many of their followers through (flimsy) blanket denials or (insincere) statements of contrition.

The flock will always welcome the shepherd back into the fold when he strays.

The irony of an alleged homosexual and a reputed adulterer sponsoring a Family Values amendment is utterly lost on these people. God uses broken vessels to do his will.

This spiritual largess does not extend to those outside their political camp. So, even though a Muslim-to-Christian convert is highly coveted in the missions field, Barack Obama's obviously genuine conversion is greeted with extreme suspicion.

This Is Why I Like Hearing Your Take

This is why I like hearing your take on things like this, Ken. I'm ignorant of the stuff like "broken vessels to do his will" and the like.

It starts to make some sense (?) to me when I read things like this. "Some" does not equal "a lot", however.

No 'Sense' To Be Made Of It, Sadly

Mike,

The 'spiritual' leadership of the fundamentalist Christian movement are abusing the faith of their followers. They have set up a culture where intellectualism is frowned upon, and the rank-and-file are encouraged to look at the world 'through spiritual eyes'. In this world of spiritual reckoning, fact can't be allowed to get in the way of 'spiritual truth'. And 'spiritual truth' is defined by the leadership.

Now that the leadership of the Christian right has a political agenda, the same tractable resource that made millions for cold-eyed televangelists is being exploited as a political bloc, with the Republican Party becoming literally the arm of Jesus trying to force change in American society.

So Craig and Vitter aren't viewed as hypocritical politicians with their careers in shambles who are making a cynical bid to salvage their reputations with hagiographic legislation. They are probably being portrayed to their followers as heroic figures who are being slandered by the liberal media for trying to bring the country back to its Christian roots. Even if the charges are factual, it doesn't matter, they are tools of God's will. That's the 'spiritual truth' of the situation.
