The Texas Blue
Advancing Progressive Ideas

Monday Afternoon: Of interest

It has been reported by numerous outlets that Phil Gramm of UBS and Texas Senate fame is in on Perry's idea to sell the lottery, and was part of the team that conceived of the sale in the first place.

This isn't much of a surprise — lobbyists, former pols, and staffers cashing in on networking happens every second the world turns. This case certainly illustrates that no act of inclusion is too overt for the guys at the top. Burka outlines the involvement of Gramm and notes also that Mike Toomey, Perry's former chief of staff, stands to benefit. So before we go to Perry's Big Idea Party about everything we can buy with all that lottery money, the genesis of the ideas is a consideration, as always.

Also, if you watched the Chris Matthews Show this weekend, you may have seen Time's Joe Klein predict that Joe Lieberman is about to take his ball across the aisle to the Republican Party. In all seriousness, that's pretty bad. And it also says a thing or two about Joe's idea of how the GOP can do in 08. From the transcript:

Mr. KLEIN: This is just a guess, but it's an educated and a reported guess. The Democrats in the Senate are getting really, really angry at Joe Lieberman, especially because he's been accusing them of undermining the troops' morale. And Joe Lieberman isn't too happy with the Democrats, either. I think there's going to be an explosion and perhaps a party switch pretty soon.
