Betty lives in Graham, Texas, with her husband of 40 years, State Chair of the Texas Democratic Party, County and City Attorney, Boyd Richie. She and Boyd are the parents of two grown children and the grandparents of four wonderful grandchildren.

She is a cradle Democrat and has been active in the Democratic Party since birth. She campaigned for her father, her husband, all Democrats who were in, around, close to Young County or on the Democrat ticket and then herself in a bid for State Representative.

  • Serves as a Democratic National Committeewoman.
  • Served as Precinct Chair for many years.
  • Became the first woman to be elected County Chair of Young County.
  • First president and organizer of Young County Texas Democratic Women.
  • The first woman to run against a Republican in the 68th State Representative District which included 13 counties and 11,000 square miles.
  • Served as an add-on member of the State Democratic Executive Committee for the State Democratic Party.
  • Served as board member, secretary, president-elect and State President of Texas Democratic Women.
  • Received the Award for Outstanding Member of the Year for State Texas Democratic Women.
  • Serves as a board member of the North Texas Rehabilitation Center.
  • Served as secretary on the board of Turning Point.
  • Served as board member of the Library of Graham Board, Board of 100 Plus, and the Young County Child Welfare Board.
  • Taught for 25 years in public schools.
  • A retired teacher and enjoys membership in Who’s Who among American Teachers and is president of the local Texas Retired Teachers’ Association.
  • Presently a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer.
  • Recently appointed to the Selective Service System Area Local Board 137 for the State of Texas.
  • Member of the Non Urban/Agriculture Caucus.
  • Member of the First United Methodist Church of Graham, Texas.
  • Nominee for the Jane Q. Piper Volunteer Advocate of the Year for 2005
