Cornyn Balks at Senate Immigration Deal

According to MSNBC, Politico, and probably every other major American news source, the Senate has worked out the details of a compromise bill on immigration. The Politico story is of particular interest, in that it says Senator John Cornyn may not want to play ball.

Wednesday Roundup: Things Happen

Yesterday was a busy, busy day in politics, both statewide and nationally. The 2nd GOP Presidential debate was on in South Carolina, Jerry Falwell died, Keffer and Craddick drew up some battle lines for Republican House Leadership, and the Voter ID bill was blocked from debate.

Monday Roundup: A Winner Is Several People

The city elections were this last weekend, and Democrats made it in all over the place. City Councilman Ed Oakley is in the Dallas mayoral runoff against Tom Leppert, and Melissa Noriega, wife of State Representative (and friend of the show) Rick Noriega, came pretty close to winning outright the Houston City Council seat vacated by Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, but will face a runoff opponent in Roy Morales.

Friday Roundup: Lucasfilm Legal On Line 2

It must be that heady time of year when legislators have been working long hours and start making bad decisions. Behold State Senator Tommy Williams: he showed up on the Senate floor wearing a Darth Vader mask. I can see the opposition mail piece now. "Darth Williams: He Will Crush Social Services WITH HIS MIND."

They Must Be Doing Something Right

Peter Stern just sent me this email that's making the rounds among Texas Republicans. You usually only see these kinds of emails when the GOP is trying to whip their people into a panicked frenzy. It includes the usual litany of ridiculous claims:

Thursday Roundup: More and Other Democrats

In the post for this week's episode of Who's Blue, I referred to Sam Coats and Don Hill as "two Democratic candidates in the non-partisan race for Dallas City Mayor." Several people have pointed out, since yesterday, that Dallas City Councilman Ed Oakley is also a Democrat, and is also running for Mayor, so I am glad we didn't say that Coats and Hill were the only Democrats. As always, visit every candidate, judiciously, and remember to vote in your city elections.

Wednesday Roundup: You Can't Do That On The House Floor

The Texas media is all atwitter with news that House Speaker Craddick has lost control of the store, the inmates are running the asylum, the wheels have come off, and so forth. Though it took longer to happen than I had originally thought, the weaknesses exposed by the contested race for Speaker back in January are starting to show themselves.

Frost on Rahm Emanuel

Former Congressman Martin Frost regularly contributes opinion pieces to Politico.com and FoxNews. In yesterday's FoxNews column, he discusses a new book on Rahm Emanuel, the last election cycle, and the end of the Republican Revolution. We reproduce it here with permission from Congressman Frost.

Monday Roundup: Midnight Mitt

I know this isn't the first time, and that various candidates have run commercials in the previous weeks, but it really hit home for me last night when at close to 1 AM during a rerun of Meet The Press, I saw a campaign commercial for Mitt Romney. We are through the looking glass, people. I had been thinking that all of this was getting underway a little early, but now the reality of the 2008 election has come to my very doorstep.

Homeland Security and the Very Bad Steve

State Representative (and friend of the show) Rick Noriega hands out some beatdown to state Homeland Security director Steve McCraw over border security. Seriously, Steve, what did you expect?
