Texas Blue Mailbag: Week of 5/27/07

This week's edition of the mailbag is heavy on questions and comments about Mikal Watts.

Who is Kos running against Cornyn?

I love mysteries, so when I got an email titled "Who is this mystery person?" from Patrick McLeod last week, I was intrigued. It pointed me to this post by Kos in which he says he's trying to recruit someone to run against Cornyn for Senate in 2008. He says he is very excited about this potential candidate, so I'm curious: who do you think Kos is talking about?

Monday Roundup - Primaries and Punishments

We have a lot of exciting items for you this week: Chris Bell has an essay on the TAKS test and its efficacy, staff writer Josh Davis holds forth on the debate over Texas casinos, and later today Karl Lynch will begin a five-part Bill Tracker series on election laws.

Talk to the... well, you know.

State Senator Jeff Wentworth (Luddite - San Antonio) would like me to stop rocking my cell phone while I'm driving. So long as this doesn't effect my high-speed text messaging, I will fully endorse it.

TPA Roundup, Week of 1/10/2011

I might be back, but I'm sure not the only one writing -- and thank goodness, considering the mess that this coming legislative session is going to be. So here's a highlight reel of stories from the rest of your bloggers at the Texas Progressive Alliance.

Democratic Gubernatorial Primary Debate To Be Held Feb. 8

KERA, the Dallas-area public broadcasting television station, has announced that it will hold a debate between the two frontrunners for the Democratic nomination for governor, Houston mayor Bill White and hair care magnate Farouk Shami on Monday, February 8 at pm.

On HB 710, Texas Students Lose

As with many things related to our State Board of Education, a very important and very disappointing development quietly took place yesterday, this time in the Lege. HB 710, a bill that would make the SBOE subject to Sunset review, went down 71-73 after being read for the third time this session.

Municipal Elections and Swine Flu

Across the state of Texas, we're in the final week of municipal campaigns. Sadly, here in North Texas we're also in a period of ramping up the public sector response to the spread of H1N1 flu (swine flu). The Fort Worth ISD announced earlier this week that they will be closed this week. On Friday, the Lewisville ISD announced that they will be closed this week. Yesterday, the Denton ISD announced that they will be closed this week. All three districts are targeting being open on May 11th.

Garcia Nominated for Assistant Secretary of Navy

Hat tip to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, by way of Vince at Capitol Annex (who has been covering this story for a while now). President Obama announced today his intention to nominate former HD 32 state representative Juan Garcia for Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

Voter ID Compromise In The House

Emily Ramshaw blogs at the Dallas Morning News' Trail Blazers blog that there is a voter ID compromise floating around the Texas House today. The compromise bill is sponsored by Rep. Todd Smith (R-Euless), the chair of the House Elections Committee.
