Denton County Republican Endorses Democrat For Mayor Of Dallas
Mon, 06/11/2007 - 2:23pm
I was as shocked as you are. I went to my mailbox this week and opened my umpteenth piece of literature from Ed Oakley for Mayor of Dallas. But wait! This was no ordinary lit drop, no ordinary endorsement. It was an endorsement from the retired Republican Denton County Commissioner from Precinct 2, the Honorable Sandy Jacobs.
A tiny swath of the city of Dallas sits in Denton County's Commissioner Precinct 2. I assume that Ed Oakley is searching for the conservative voters in far north Dallas which he desperately needs to win the election. However, this would seem an odd way to go about it; the Denton County section of north Dallas leans toward the Democratic vote more than the rest of the area.
I reproduce this letter here (as it is typed) for your amazement and viewing pleasure:
Dear friends,
For 24 years I served you as Denton County Commissioner, including a section in far north Dallas that falls into Denton County. In that position, I had a unique perspective on issues that concern the city of Dallas and the North Texas area. I'm proud of my record of service, and today I'm writing to you with an important message about our future.
I've known Ed Oakley for many years, and I've seen him grow as a member of the Planning Commission and City Council. Ed Oakley's election to the Mayor's office would be good for Dallas, and good for the region. Ed has a specific and proven plan to lower crime and increase the quality of life for Dallas' citizens. He has proposed real tax relief for our senior citizens. He supports green space and smart environmental policy. He has worked tirelessly to develop the inland port which will bring jobs and revenue to this area, while making North Texas a vital hub of global commerce.
Ed Oakley is passionate, informed and involved. He had the knowledge and the experience to move Dallas forward in this critical time. I am proud to support Ed Oakley for Mayor of Dallas.
Sincerely,
Sandy Jacobs
