Martin Frost Makes America Vote
Mon, 06/11/2007 - 1:55pm
Former Congressman Martin Frost has persisted as a center of Democratic political power since his redistricted loss to Pete Sessions, and now he is lending his clout as the new president of America Votes, a coordinating body dedicated to the mobilization of many of the nation's top liberal and labor organizations.
Frost's past positions as DCCC chairman and caucus chair (a post now held by Congressman Rahm Emanuel) provide him the experience and the fund raising network to make things happen. Frost is nationally respected as one of the sharpest minds in the party. Running America Votes is a big job, and his skills are a good fit. Increasing nationwide turnout and voter registration requires organizations and individuals with national reach, and coordinating the many large member organizations is an exercise comparable to coordinating a national congressional campaign strategy.
Member organizations of America Votes include some names you're familiar with: 21st Century Democrats, AFL-CIO, American Federation of Teachers, Democracy for America, EMILY’s List, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), MoveOn.org, NAACP National Voter Fund, National Education Association, Progressive Majority, SEIU, and Young Democrats of America are just some of the member groups that by themselves are significant organizing forces in American politics.
With Frost, a proven grassroots talent, at the helm of America Votes (which I just described to Angela as National Democratic Grassroots Central Command), these groups could band together to initiate some pretty effective and permeating message and mobilization.
