The (Worst) Jobs of the Future

If you were thinking about starting over in a new career or if you're just about to be faced with the job market for the first time, Forbes has a line on some jobs — and entire industries — that are on the decline.

Some of the jobs that are going to have severely reduced workforces in the coming years make sense: file clerks will have less utility as technology automates and improves the process of document archiving, manufacturing jobs will continue to decline, and some industries that are changing entirely to digital formats, like consumer photography.

There are some surprises, though. I knew the newspaper was in trouble, but government forecasts point to developments in economics and business — rather than technological advances — as the main reason for the decline of the city desk. While the industry won't decline, growth will slow appreciably as more media conglomerates cut costs and reduce staff sizes.

I was also surprised to hear that job growth for radio announcers will slow down due to a similar business consolidation among radio stations. Who would have thought? Or that job growth among federal employees would be reduced significantly?
