Dodd Endorses Obama

While it isn't the coveted Edwards endorsement, it is worth noting that Senator Chris Dodd endorsed Barack Obama and the usual press analysis followed. Dodd has party power and liberal cred and was being courted by both campaigns.

The Return of Romney?

There probably isn't much to this, but McCain has certainly been having a bad couple of days, so why wouldn't Romney be thinking about getting back in the business of presidential politics? It didn't work for Ross Perot, but that didn't stop him.

The Mercy Rule

I'm not sure that having the Rudy Giuliani-endorsing Governor of Texas making homey six man football analogies about Mike Huckabee is really the best way to dismiss his campaign among Texas conservatives:

McCain's Day Gets Worse: DNC To File Suit

We mentioned earlier John McCain's run-in with the Federal Election Commission regarding whether he can opt out of public funding against FEC rules. Well, that problem seems to be about to get a good deal worse for him. The Democratic National Committee is filing an official complaint against McCain with the FEC.

McCain's Self-Aware Moment #1

The Iraq War has sort of faded into the background as an issue during the primaries, but you can bet it will be an enormous issue in the general election. John McCain has a nice self-aware moment here when he proclaims that if he can't change American hearts and minds about the Iraq War, he could lose the general election because of his position on same. I happen to think he'll lose the general election for a host of reasons and that this is merely one of many.

Shedding Loser Mentality is Tall Order for Party

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Who knows? If two candidates for the U.S. Senate debate and the coverage is minimal, does it make any difference? Unfortunately, yes.

State Rep. Rick Noriega and Ray McMurrey, a Corpus Christi schoolteacher, squared off in Austin last week. Noriega is heavily favored to win the Democratic nomination, but McMurrey was vocal enough to force the showdown.

Early Voting Update

To update George's article about early voting numbers in Texas, I've taken the county totals for Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Travis and Denton (since it's the home of The Blue) through the first three days of early primary voting in 2008 versus the first three days of early primary voting in 2004 (all data from the Secretary of State's website):

McCain's Slight Money Problem

John McCain's campaign was almost broke several times over the course of the Republican primary, so it must have seemed like a good idea at the time when he signed up for public matching funds to be paid out in March. That decision would severely limit the total amount he could raise and spend but would give his campaign a shot in the arm late in the primary, which back then must have seemed like smart planning for the future.
