The Texas Blue: News

Wednesday Roundup: War On Terror Expansion Pack

No matter what you think, the biggest story in the last 24 hours — and probably in a much larger span of time than that — is the news, reported here by the Washington Post, that the Bush administration is going to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps "as a 'specially designated global terrorist.'"

The Imperial Presidency: The Sequel

Forget the approaching multi-million dollar film starring Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep. The real life, modern-day version of government shenanigans continues to provide summer entertainment that is, if not appreciated, at least much more riveting. At least admission is free!

Tuesday Roundup: Stuff Is Expensive

It seems that just about everyone's running some piece on their hindsight insight about Rove's resignation, but hey — I have
editorial privilege, and I want to lead off with this: I guess that overextended wars we never should have been in can temporarily take the news eye away from petty, non-democracy-saving things like the economy, but eventually they'll come back to bite you.

Surprise! You're Being Audited By The RNC!

This is a weird little tale that comes to us from TPM Muckraker: the Republican National Committee has started sending out letters to people saying that "a recent audit of your Party affiliation turned up some irregularities." The letters then ask for money.

Arms-Deal Diplomacy

In yet another cheerful and reassuring meeting between nations, talks last week between Defense Secretary Gates, State Secretary Rice and Saudi envoy Saud al Faisal broke down over US allegations that Saudi Arabia is providing financial and logistical support to Iraq’s Sunni insurgency.

Navigating the Potholes of Politics

No good deed in politics and government goes unpunished. No matter how well meaning, you’re going to upset someone.

I learned that lesson shortly after my introduction to the sport. For years, Alison and I had bumped along down Drexel to get to her parents’ home on Betsy Lane. Drexel was about as torn up and pitted with potholes as a street could be.

Monday Roundup: Karl Rove Resigns

Karl Rove announced very, very early this morning that he is resigning his post and leaving politics, effective August 31. He says it is to spend more time with his family. An obvious plus for Republicans is Rove's absence as the election nears — "Karl Rove" as a phrase carries what some might call a negative connotation, and any distance between him and politics is probably a net plus for the GOP in 2008. Or rather, they are at least not hurt anymore by his presence in the White House.

Vets for Freedom Not for Vets

A relatively new group calling themselves Vets for Freedom is pressuring politicians to keep US troops in Iraq indefinitely.

On The Record - Danny Cooke

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Danny Cooke, Committeeman for Senate District 12 and President of Texas State Council of Machinists.

And Now for Your Listening Pleasure: [Censored]

On Sunday night during the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, Pearl Jam took the stage and began their performance one of their hit songs, “Daughter”. During an improvisation of the song, the band’s lead singer, Eddie Vedder, a famous opponent to the war in Iraq, expressed his unhappiness with the Bush administration. But for those of us listening to the show via AT&T’s Blue Room website, we didn’t hear a thing.
