Wednesday Roundup: All-Nighter Nail-Biter, Senate Edition
Wed, 07/18/2007 - 7:00am
If you enjoy a little bizarre mixed in with your politics, you will enjoy all the pictures of cots and pizza boxes from last night's all-night Senate slumber party. Senate Democrats decided enough was enough, and that the time had come to hammer something out on Iraq. DID IT HAPPEN? Politico has a chronology from the evening's events.
Lynch's Star
Tue, 07/17/2007 - 3:00pm
Major General Rick Lynch has been popping up on the news and at Pentagon briefings a lot lately. According to some, he is well thought of in the military community. He seems to be living up to the Army's Campaign Plan, communicating the Army's message the way it wants — even writing a column carried as news in the Third ID's local paper. Some reporters and at least one other officer are uncomfortable with this as it seems to walk close to the edge of propaganda.
A Failure of Public Policy
Tue, 07/17/2007 - 1:00pm
I got an email a few days ago from the John Edwards campaign. Tied into Edwards' poverty awareness tour, the Subject line said: "George W. Bush doesn't care about poor people." Federal CHIP Trouble
Mon, 07/16/2007 - 2:30pm
There was no small amount of work by Texas Democrats dedicated to making CHIP available to more children this last legislative session. There's a federal version of CHIP, and legislators from both parties have sought to increase the reach and accessibility of that program. Unfortunately (but not unexpectedly), the Bush administration is planning to veto the measure.
A Softer, Gentler Farmers Branch. Or Not.

Farmers Branch has a PR problem, and they know it.
Monday Roundup: A Veritable News Quagmire
Mon, 07/16/2007 - 7:00am
We have a lot to get into this morning, but we'll open with this: Lady Bird Johnson was laid to rest next to President Lyndon Johnson at their family's ranch on Sunday. Statesman has a nice series on retrospectives, the four days of ceremony, and some stories and remembrances of the former First Lady.

Where Will Independents Land In '08?
Sat, 07/14/2007 - 2:00pm
Late last week, I found the results of a new project from the folks at The Washington Post and some wicked smart guys at Harvard on independents in the American electorate. What they found may surprise you.
