The Texas Blue: News

News Roundup, 5/1/08: The Media Misses The Point. Again.

We've got a veritable smorgasbord of news from yesterday, but I want to lead off with Senator Clinton's appearance on O'Reilly — where the loser in the showdown was the American media.

Senator Watson Hopes for the (TxDOT) Best

There was an audible groan throughout Texas on the news that Governor Rick Perry had appointed a toll road pro and former staffers to the Texas transportation Commission, but friend of the show State Senator Kirk Watson is feeling philosophical about the whole thing. His comments on the matter are here at the Austin Chronicle.

Clinton's O'Reilly Performance

So Clinton's interview with Bill O'Reilly has come and gone — well, at least in part. The first two parts aired today, and the last two will air tomorrow. You can find the 30-second clip of her speaking about Pastor Wright just about anywhere on the Internet, but unsurprisingly, it pretty much misconstrues the entire interview. So here, for your viewing pleasure, we have both of the parts that aired tonight in their entirety. Video after the jump.

Covering the McCain Coverage with Coverage

From our pals at TPM Election Central comes a potentially useful new website: McCain Source, with an eye turned toward media coverage of John McCain and an effort towards keeping it honest.

Mexican Gangs Provide Most U.S. Meth

From McClatchy:

MEXICO CITY — A U.S. crackdown on domestic methamphetamine labs has created opportunities for Mexican drug cartels and their "superlabs" to fill the void.

Law enforcement agencies now consider "meth" produced in Mexico to be the greatest drug menace in the Western United States and a growing concern across the southeast and mid-Atlantic states, according to a Department of Justice report released this year.

O'Reilly Says We Didn't Invade Iraq

I'm just totally speechless. If it isn't Dana Perino refitting history for better PR, it's Bill O'Reilly denying a basic concept like 'just a little while ago.' Both via ThinkProgress.

Fred Back On The Trail with Other Quitters Mitt, Rudy

The never-ending parade of the comically weak Republican presidential candidate field ('08!) continues. Really, if one of them hadn't been so quick to give up we could have a four-way race going on.

Senator Clinton Calls For Fort Bragg Investigation

Via Digby from the Fayetteville (NC) Observer:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said in an interview Tuesday that she will call for a congressional hearing in response to an online video that shows poor living conditions at barracks on Fort Bragg.

Health Care Via Market Capitalism

John McCain wants to get some free marker into your health care, and he hasn't even bothered to come up with his own plan - he's just going to recycle President Bush's. This is truly an example of maximizing efficiency.

P.S. What did I just say?
