The Texas Blue: News

Tom Tancredo Tells Us How To Run Our Border

Anything with the title "Lawmakers get hostile reception at border fence hearing" gets my attention because I can guess said lawmakers are usually Republicans. In the case of this article, the lawmaker singled out for the ire of the citizens was none other than Colorado Republican and all around unpleasant fellow Representative Tom Tancredo. Check this exchange out for a taste of Tancredo's wisdom:

58%

What's that? It's the percentage of girls between the ages of 14 and 17 who were removed from the YFZ (Yearning For Zion) compound in Schleicher County, Texas, who are either pregnant or who have already given birth to children.

McCain London Fundraiser Under Scrutiny

Judicial Watch has filed a complaint with the FEC over a recent McCain fundraiser held in London. The complaint ponders whether the free venue for the event was 'an illegal in-kind contribution'. Some campaign staffer is getting canned over this one.

Oh, That's What the Roberts Court is For

Oh boy. The Rise of Voter ID:

The Supreme Court has ruled that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights. The decision validates Republican-inspired voter ID laws.

Bolivia's President Plays Soccer

Via the International Herald Tribune, we find Bolivian President Evo Morales logged 41 minutes of game time for Bolivian second division club Litoral.

While President Morales failed to score in his debut, the article does mention that he once played soccer in his younger days for a local coca farmers' team.

Tale of Two Cities: Applying Sense to Guilt, Innocence

What starkly different headlines. The day after the Supreme Court ruled last week that death by lethal injection doesn’t constitute cruel and unusual punishment, two stories ran in the Houston Chronicle: “DNA frees Dallas man wrongly imprisoned for rape” and “Harris County gets ready to execute 6 killers.”

That pretty well sums up the vastly different approach taken by Texas’s two largest district attorney offices, and sadly, that won’t change any time soon.

Dean Means It: End This In June

Just in case you'd forgotten since he went to the media last week, DNC Chairman Howard Dean wants you (and probably a few Democratic presidential candidates) to know that this race has to end in June. Seriously, please. From TPM Election Central.

News Roundup, 4/28/2008: To a TV Near You

As far as I'm concerned, the biggest news items of the last few days are the new ads by the DNC about Senator John McCain.

On The Record: Tillman Chaplin

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Tillman Chaplin, County Chair of the Erath County Democratic Party.
