Even More GOP Retirements

I wasn't sure it was possible, but the Republican Party will have to do without two more incumbents. Reps Jim Saxton from New Jersey and Barbara Cubin from Wyoming are on the way out.

Barbara Cubin is described charitably as "underachieving" — in Wyoming, a Republican shouldn't ever have trouble winning in Wyoming, but she did. She might actually help the Wyoming GOP out by letting someone else run for the seat, so on the balance, this won't make that much of a difference.

But Jim Saxton's seat will cause problems for New Jersey Republicans. His district isn't even Republican, and he and Bush both just barely won in a Democratic area of a Democratic state. That one is almost assuredly a pickup for Democrats.

NJ

I would still label Saxton's district a toss up. Even though NJ is mostly Democratic, the party has its issues with corruption. Also the Governor is not very popular right now. Although I dont remember any Democratic governor in NJ ever being popular once they elected him. It's a weird state in more ways than one.
