Polls for Everyone, Even the 14 Republicans Who RSVP'ed

Dual news on the straw poll front today. On the GOP side: Mike Huckabee won't be attending the Republican straw poll in Fort Worth this weekend. Sam Brownback also pulled out. That means only Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, and some other people you've never heard of will be there. On the Democratic side: The Texas Democratic Party is having an ePrimary Poll this weekend, and that promises to be much more popular than paying $75 to have Duncan Hunter yell at you.

The ePrimary Poll will not only let you pick your favorite for President, but it also will let you say why you're voting for them. That sounds like a pretty good time to me — the DMN has more details for you, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that you'll be able to vote up to and including September 7.

As for the Republican straw poll, I can only imagine what the delegate selection will be like. These will be only the hardest of the hardcore. The people that are still bothering to show up — Hunter, Paul, and one Senator John Cornyn — are probably representative of who you might find there, gnashing their teeth and imaging terrible consequences of a Democratic White House in 2008.

TDP poll

So how many times will I get to vote on the TDP poll? I have yet to find an online poll you can not maneuveur around and vote multiple times over.

YEah

They said that might be a problem, but who knows: hope for IP blocking springs eternal I guess.

Unfortunately

When you run an online poll, IP blocking creates more problems than it solves; in particular, NAT'd offices become a first-come, only-served affair, and AOL dialup users (whose requests could appear to come from a different address every time they load the page) aren't impeded in the slightest.

The most effective way is to implement a registration system, a la the polls DFA and MoveOn conduct -- still far from perfect, since nothing prevents someone from creating a Yahoo! mail account and pretending to be Sven Jinglesgaard from International Falls -- but it does make large-scale falsifying much harder to script and keeps most would-be honest people honest without setting up a oft-malfunctioning technical minefield along the way.
