All I Want for Christmas Is: Government for the People

For far too long and too often, government has not operated in the best interest of the public it is supposed to serve. Government continues significantly marginalizing consumer and public interests while ensuring the powerful and wealthy private interests are well served. Republicans have successfully transformed our government from public advocate to corporate shill. Our legislative bodies, no longer resembling the places of high-minded debate and discourse they once were, are sullied by the taint of legislation in return for campaign contributions and high-paying positions in the private sector.

Public policy should be crafted to benefit the public, not corporate bottom lines. Public policy should be used to solve problems, not carry out ideological agendas. So for this Christmas, I wish for a re-dedication of government to serve the people. All I really want for Christmas is government for the people.
