Give Thanks For: Giving Back

My political experience started last spring with an idea. The idea was to start an organization comprised of young people who would be willing to get into Democratic politics in Denton County in a way that only young people can. At first this seemed like an impossible task, as there weren't many people I knew so wholeheartedly devoted to the political experience and I had never been part of building and maintaining an organization. However, as our task unfolded the true meaning and impact of what was happening began to dawn on me.

So, the sanctions against Iran have made the newsrounds by now. Clearly the Bush administration has decided to make another bad decision unilaterally because nobody wants to play with us.

The House Takes On Blackwater

The House today passed HR2470, a bill to look into Blackwater and its questionable activities in Iraq. This bill was met with plenty of criticism from both the White House and Blackwater President Erik Prince, but both conceded that the time for accountability has come. With the death toll on Blackwater's tab up to around 200 in two years, and no government oversight over the company hired to protect civilians and government officials in Iraq, there now appears to be action from all sides of government.

The Dollar Equals the Loonie

You read that headline right — for the first time since 1976 the US dollar is the same amount of money as a quaint coin affectionately called 'the loonie'. You might know it as the Canadian dollar. In the not so distant past of 2002 the loonie was at an all time low against the dollar. So what happened?

No more No Child!

It is a sign of the times that House education committee chairman and co-author Rep. George Miller has recently spoken out against the No Child Left Behind Act, which comes up for renewal in September. The law, which has fervent supporters and opponents on both sides of the aisle, favors standardized testing rather than letting teachers do what they do best: teach.
