Bush Vetoes Torture Ban

The news came on the radio when we were in the car.

My wife Diana and I were on the way back from Fort Worth with our friends Chris and Amy from out of town. Chris is a Republican who, in recent years, has had trouble identifying with his party. The news report on NPR finished with the line, "Congressional Democrats do not have enough votes to overturn the veto."

After a few seconds of silence, Chris asked, "What kind of world do we live in when there aren't enough votes in Congress to overturn a veto on a torture ban?"

Not one of us had a good answer for that.
