Giuliani Abortion Position Untenable

GOP presidential frontrunner Rudy Giuliani will soon find that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. During the recent GOP candidate debate, Giuliani attempted to do just that and more. As he has repeated recently, Giuliani said that he is personally pro-life, publicly pro-choice, pro public funding for abortion, and ok with a repeal of Roe v. Wade.

Giuliani may soon find his positions moving him from frontrunner to former frontrunner. I have a hard time believing that the Republican base would tolerate a nominee who supports publicly funded abortions. Even if hell did freeze over and Giuliani won the nomination, he would have a difficult time selling his position to non-primary voters. Giuliani’s position alienates voters on both sides of the issue. Ultimately, this rather inconsequential debate may become a significant moment where Giuliani’s abortion gaffes end up paving the way for Mitt Romney or John McCain.
