Michigan is the latest in a long line of states to seriously consider moving their primary to an earlier date.
Although negotiations are apparently still underway, the two party organizations in Michigan appear likely to set their respective primaries for January 15th. This would put them ahead of even South Carolina's ambitious Republicans and would probably set off another round of the primary dance.
The article engages in the usual math: New Hampshire state law says their primary has to be a week earlier than any other primary, so this would kick them back to the first week of January, and then Iowa might have to move back into December since they currently have a similar state law mandating them to go 8 days before New Hampshire.
We previously reported that Iowa's Governor Chet Culver is lined up firmly against having any votes in 2007, but I guess you never know what will happen until it is all over. I have a sneaking suspicion that the whole Michigan primary move may be motivated by disrupting the potential gubernatorial campaign of Motor City Madman Ted Nugent, anyways.
