More Windmills, Fewer Coal-Fired Plants

Instead of fast-tracking construction of 17 coal-fired power plants, Governor Perry should fast-track state funding for conservation measures and energy alternatives to help alleviate future electricity shortages.

Lubbock Online reports Shallowater ISD is not waiting for Governor Perry and has installed five power-generating windmills. The windmills produce 140-150 kilowatt hours annually meeting one-third of the high school's electricity needs and half of the middle and elementary schools. This translates to approximately $75,000 in savings a year. Each windmill cost $140,000-$150,000.

Shallowater ISD covered 30 percent of the cost through bonds and the state picked up the remaining 70 percent. More folks should take Shallowater ISD's lead, including Governor Perry.
