Municipal Elections and Swine Flu

Across the state of Texas, we're in the final week of municipal campaigns. Sadly, here in North Texas we're also in a period of ramping up the public sector response to the spread of H1N1 flu (swine flu). The Fort Worth ISD announced earlier this week that they will be closed this week. On Friday, the Lewisville ISD announced that they will be closed this week. Yesterday, the Denton ISD announced that they will be closed this week. All three districts are targeting being open on May 11th.

Considering that municipal elections are usually the least attended of all elections, we could be in for some historically low numbers across North Texas and possibly the rest of Texas, too. I hope that won't be the case, but I think it's reasonable to assume that if school districts are closing down in an effort to eliminate one of the most significant public vectors of transmission, we're not going to see too many people lining up to vote this week or on May 9th.
