On The Record: Franklin Williams

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Franklin Williams, Democratic Party County Chair for Jasper County, located in Southeast Texas.

How did you get started in politics? Did you come to it in your youth or later on?

I was interested in what was going on in the government, like health benefits and senior issues, and decided to get involved.

I was interested in how the government was run and how the money was spent on all levels.

What was your personal progression from the role of activist to the role of county chair?

About 20 years ago, there was a vacant seat and I ran and was elected, appointed by the committee to finish the term. I have held the seat for 20 years.

What would you say are the primary issues concerning Jasper County?

Issues in Jasper County concern the services provided by the county. It’s important for the money in the county to be accounted for and spent properly in the area.

Who are some of your political heroes?

Lyndon B. Johnson and John Hill, who ran for Governor of Texas and served as Secretary of State and was also elected as Attorney General of Texas and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, are both political heroes of mine. Hill was the first person in Texas to serve as Texas Secretary of State, Attorney General and Chief Justice.

What would you say the political breakdown of your family is? Is it mostly Democratic or are you somewhat unique?

Both of my parents were Democratic, and I have a family history of Democrats.

What advice would you give to young people just getting into politics?

Become aware of the issues and what’s going on, and take part in the system. Here in Jasper County there are few Democratic youth involved. We have a Democratic club but it’s not specifically for youth.

What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in politics?

Know what’s going on and participate in the process.
