On The Record: Katelyn Patterson

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Katelyn Patterson, deputy finance director for the Texas Democratic Party.

How did you get started in politics? Did you come to it in your youth or later on?

Although I come from a family of Democrats, I really started to pay attention in 2000. As I began to see how important it is to have a voice in the political process, my interest in politics grew.

What was your personal progression from the role of activist to the role of deputy finance director?

I started volunteering in Tarrant County and got very involved with the Tarrant County Young Democrats. Next thing I knew, I was moving to Houston to work as a Deputy Finance Director on Chris Bell’s gubernatorial race last cycle and now I am in Austin!

Who are some of your political heroes?

I find Robert Kennedy very inspiring and I very often wonder how things would be today if things had been different. Robert Kennedy’s work in the civil rights movement, much like John Edwards’ commitment to fight for the working class, embodies the values of the Democratic Party.

What are you looking forward to in the coming cycle?

From the White House to the county courthouse, I strongly believe Texas Democrats have a great opportunity to make significant gains up and down the ballot. Whether it is making history with our presidential nominee or beating Cornyn, the 2008 election cycle will be a continuation of the progress we made in 2006.

What advice would you give to young people just getting into politics?

Volunteer at your county party or for a campaign. Use your talents to get Democrats elected! Although I don’t regret having worked on fundraising events for non-profits right out of college, I always thought to myself, “If only I could use my knowledge of events and fundraising to help get Democrats elected…”

What has been the most valuable lesson you have learned in politics?

When you feel tired and worked to the max, you have only just begun. Make time for yourself and do non-political things every once in a while.
