On The Record: Norma Narramore

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Norma Narramore, Committeewoman for Senate District 1, member of the Election Committee for the Texas Silver Haired Legislature (www.txshl.org), and Titus Democratic County Chair.

How did you get started in politics? Did you come to it in your youth or later on?

I’ve been involved for years, and I can’t remember exactly how I began. My family has always been Democratic. I moved to Dallas and worked for a bank. I wanted to be in a union, so I went to work for Collins radio and became involved with a union.

What would you say are the primary issues concerning Titus County?

Health care and education are issues, not only here but all over.

How do state politics affect your family?

The war doesn’t affect my family directly, but it affects us because we care about the men and women fighting for our country.

My husband and I have excellent insurance due to his work with the postal service, but our interest is in other people being able to pay for their medication and other expenses. Everyone should be able to receive the medication they need without worries.

Who are some of your political heroes?

I have a lot of political heroes. Sam Rayburn, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy are heroes of mine. Bill Clinton definitely heads the list. There are a lot of Democratic people that have done a wonderful job.

What one thing would you say a political organization never has enough of?

Organizations need young people. We need young voters and people to be able to do the leg work older volunteers can’t do. It’s important to educate them on the issues and what Democrats stand for.

Tell us a little bit about the Texas Silver Haired Legislature, and what roles you feel like you fulfill in that group, official or otherwise.

It is a group of elected officials that are elected by senior citizens. We are advocates for elderly people so they can live and buy the medicine they need.

I am on the Elections committee to ensure the organization is run correctly. The group is non-partisan and I don’t like that aspect of the group. It’s hard for me to be associated with people who hide their party, and I don’t do it so well.
