Some Uncomfortable Questions

I am a big fan of Henry Waxman, and I specifically enjoy his work on the House Oversight committee. I knew that Homeland Security, as the newest department in town, was going through some growing pains, but I didn't expect it to become a focal point for Waxman at any time in the near future. And yet, yesterday's news tells us that is precisely what's happening in the wake of a cash-for-access scheme being uncovered.

From TPM Muckraker:

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) plans to investigate reports that a Homeland Security adviser was soliciting donations to the Bush presidential library fund in exchange for access to high-ranking government officials.

The whole story is pretty amazing, and at the same time not wholly unexpected. I guess I just wouldn't have thought of the Department of Homeland Security as the conduit for something like this, and certainly not foreign officials.

Anyways, if this has legs it will be very bad news for everyone involved. I'm sure the story will develop over the next few days with ever-juicening details.
