Applications For the Axis of Evil

I didn't expect this to be the next case made by CIA, but here's the preview:

According to a dispatch from Reuters, members of three House and Senate committees will receive briefings centered on a suspected nuclear reactor in Syria that analysts believe was built with North Korean help.

I've always wondered what Syria might get up to while everyone was paying attention to other parts of the Middle East. This might also put the kibosh on all those negotiations on disarmament we've been working on with North Korea, or as the kids call it, NoKo. I will watch where this one goes with great interest.

Do You Know Who Thomas Friedman Is?

If you do, you may enjoy this tale about how he got pied at Brown University. I like that in the 21st Century, the thrown pie is still a tool of social criticism.

Early Exit Polls

A little bit of data on early exit polls from CBS. The highpoints include the economy being the leading issue. 10% of voters made up their minds today.

DNC Mailer on McCain

The DNC has plans to drop some lit in mailboxes across the country concerning John McCain and his similarities to a certain President of the United States:

The DNC chairman contends that McCain is, in fact, “as conservative as they come,” and his administration would preserve “the radical right’s hateful social agenda.” He adds, “Like President Bush,” McCain follows a “shoot first, ask questions second” foreign policy strategy, supports tax cuts for the wealthy as well as corporations that ship jobs overseas, and promises to appoint “Bush-style” judges who will overturn Roe vs. Wade.

A New Record!

... in that bad sort of way! President Bush has posted the all time highest Gallup disapproval rating.

Voting and Whatnot Plus Anecdotes

So there's a primary going on today in Pennsylvania, and lots of people are getting out to vote. Never you mind that there's over 150,000 newly registered Democratic voters in the Keystone State. Consider this instead: on the news this morning, a correspondent for MSNBC reported that at a precinct in suburban Philadelphia, 17% of everyone that is eligible to vote in that precinct had already voted by 8:30 AM. I don't know what the turnout is like everywhere else, but that seems to be pretty heavy.

Reading Skills Camp

What if, starting next school year, the basic skills of football — how to catch the ball, make a tackle, throw a block — were taught only once to each beginner Texas player in the peewee leagues or in middle school, and then rarely, if ever, again?

Now take that and apply it to reading comprehension for public school students and you get the idea behind what the Chron's Lisa Falkenberg isn't crazy about.
