House Holds Bolten, Miers in Contempt

In a move that damages Bush administration attempts to extend and broaden executive privilege, the House voted overwhelmingly to hold former White House counsel Harriet Miers and former White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten in contempt for failure to cooperate in the ongoing US attorney firing scandal. I guess this means that when you get a subpoena from Congress, they really mean it. More as it develops.

Shooting at the Falling Sky

From the Good Government Department: I would argue, in relation to this news story, that if you launch a missile at something that is already careening towards Earth from space, you are not "shooting it down." You are just "shooting a missile at it" and possibly "exploding it into several smaller pieces that will fall in a wider radius than the original object would have."

Superdelegates: What Do You Think?

I have been watching CNN and MSNBC off and on over the last two couple days, and I keep hearing the stable of pundits at both channels question the process of superdelegates, even as they have some superdelegates in the studio to talk about how they became superdelegates and who they might vote for.

The Noriega / McMurrey Debate

Last night, State Representative Rick Noriega and and Ray McMurrey, both candidates for the Democratic nomination to run against junior Senator John Cornyn in the fall, took to the stage in Austin last night for a debate.

An Incentive to File your Tax Returns

The economic stimulus package was signed into law today by President Bush. Check roll out is apparently set for May.

AP Explains It All

The Associated Press says "Hey guys, Texas is having a primary election!" If you haven't already seen it at the other, faster sources, you can learn a little bit about we pick delegates down here in the Lone Star State.

Other Politics Still Happening

House Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers has issued resolutions today in the White House / US Attorney firing scandal. One is a resolution for a civil action filed by Speaker Pelosi against the White House concerning Bush administration assertions of privilege. The other holds Josh Bolten and Harriet Miers in criminal contempt for ignoring subpoenas. Paul Kiel has the goods at TPM Muckraker.

Electoral Mathletics

McCain is now making his case that it is mathematically impossible for Mike Huckabee to win the Republican nomination. The office pool starts now. George isn't so sure, because who knows where Romney's delegates will go? I think it sounds like a sales pitch as there hasn't been an official declaration yet.

Writers Strike Officially Ends

The successful vote yesterday approved new contract terms and put an end to three months of work stoppage, stemmed heavy losses for the entertainment industry, and secured a better deal for the writers concerning earnings from online distribution. There are some important questions in the aftermath, though, especially concerning what will result of the writers strike, or rather, who actually won the battle.

A Problematic Connection for McCain

If you sell yourself as a maverick and a champion of campaign finance reform, even latent ties to Jack Abramoff are bad news. So $100,000 in contributions from employees of Abramoff's old law firm are, as professionals say, incredibly inconvenient. Not illegal, but certainly not on message. Huffington Post's Sam Stein has the details.
