No Snakes On This Plane

I like Heath Shuler. I liked him before he was elected as the Democratic Representative for North Carolina's 11th Congressional District. Why? Because he was arguably the Washington Redskins' biggest draft bust in the last 30 years coming out of Tennessee as a quarterback in the 1994 NFL Draft. Anyone who leaves the Redskins with pie on their faces is OK in my book!

Time to See the Republicans for What They Really Are
By David Gurney

So far, none of the Republican candidates for President have addressed the NAACP or other major African American institutions. Now, we all know why they used to address them. The Republicans knew they weren’t going to get an endorsement from the NAACP, but they could reassure suburban white voters that they at least cared enough about minorities to speak to them. In other words, they were trying to assure suburban white voters that they weren’t racist.
The GOP's Bleak House Hopes
Tue, 09/25/2007 - 10:00am
Yesterday I told you a little bit about the ongoing battle between House Minority Leader John Boehner and NRCC Chair Tom Cole. The surface story is a fight over staffers, but the underlying truth is one of more than a simple frustration Republicans might feel at suddenly finding themselves in the minority.
Nobody Wins When Media Take Sides

Something just didn’t make sense. I can’t remember when I first heard about the case involving the Border Patrol agents from Texas serving time for shooting a drug smuggler. It was probably after a group of Republican congressmen, among them Ted Poe and John Culberson from Houston, started crying out for something to be done to correct the injustice. They were calling the two agents heroes and arguing that it was an outrage for them to be in prison while the drug smuggler walked free.

The Dollar Equals the Loonie
By Lee Knox
Thu, 09/20/2007 - 2:00pm
You read that headline right — for the first time since 1976 the US dollar is the same amount of money as a quaint coin affectionately called 'the loonie'. You might know it as the Canadian dollar. In the not so distant past of 2002 the loonie was at an all time low against the dollar. So what happened?
Free Speech Defended (and Tasered) Everywhere

This could also be known as the requisite "Don't Tase Me, Bro!" update. I watched Tucker Carlson — Tucker Carlson, of all people — defend Andrew Meyer, the kid who got Tasered at the Kerry event. And Carlson, along with plenty of other people who watched the footage of Meyer being held down by 6 cops while they pumped 50,000 volts into him and were disgusted by it, are right: it is strange and seems far, far out of line.
Why Health Care Policy Matters
Wed, 09/19/2007 - 10:22am
Many candidates on our side have plans for a national health care system. When they talk about them you hear about big picture stuff — how it will be paid for — as well as some microcosmic examples, like how this senior citizen or that working family can't pay even their routine medical bills, let alone pay for catastrophic care.
