Child Protective Services is currently still pursuing state custody of Ana Marie Maudlin, a 2-month-old girl who was placed in a microwave oven in a Galveston hotel room by her parents, a young Arkansas couple whose exact motive for performing their abuse changes with the tide. Hearing about these events, our public gut instinct naturally encourages immediate and permanent state custody until a suitable foster home is located.

Sure, the session's over. But that doesn't mean there won't be a special one. Today I look at one bill that might bring the Lege back to stomp the yard, as the kids might say: SB 482.

Do you remember when George Allen lost the race for his Senate seat in Virginia? The exact moment when he lost may be hard to pinpoint, but the videos of him calling some guy Macaca and of people with "Allen for Senate" stickers beating up a law student at the Omni Hotel probably had something to do with it. Now Kos is urging the troops to videotape all things and appearances Republican, and Washington Post's Chris Cillizza isn't sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

The 80th session of the Texas Legislature is over. As usual, it was too short for much substantive change to come forth for the state, and too long for those covering it (and probably those attending) to make it through without pulling their hair out.

Memorial Day is upon us. In both old and new media, there is a great deal of discussion on the war. This is proper — Memorial Day is an American tradition that goes all the way back to when it was first a remembrance of Union soldiers who died during the Civil War; then, it was called Decoration Day. The holiday in and of itself is an occasion to examine and discuss the War in Iraq, and I am concerned that there doesn't seem to be an effective way of doing so.

After a weekend that saw fight after fight on the floor of the House, culminating in Representative Haggerty forcing Craddick to do something he didn't want to do in adjourning... well, you can guess what most of the news is about on Memorial Day, and likewise what constitutes most of the roundup.

If you missed the action in the Texas House this weekend, you may want to catch some of the archived video of what happened. In short, legislators tried to move to remove Craddick from the speaker's chair, and Craddick answered with a ruling that he did not actually have to recognize any such motion — or, indeed, any motion at all.
