Texas Blue Mailbag: Week of 6/24/07 (no, really)

This week's mailbag is mixed, so to speak, and nationwide.

(and the "Week Of" date is fixed now — turns out we skipped a week there in early June. Oops! — GN ed.)

Fortis Benefits v. Vanessa Cantu and Ford Motor Company

The Texas Supreme Court just held that the “made whole” doctrine must yield to an insurance company’s right to contractual subrogation under the terms of the insurance policy. To call this opinion anti-consumer would be an understatement of biblical proportions.

What does this mean? You, as a Texas citizen, are severely limited in your ability to recover in a personal injury claim.

Handicapping the New Media Candidates: John McCain's YouTube Channel

I will admit it — I look at campaign websites all the time, and I am honestly interested in how they use new media, such as YouTube or blogs. The campaigns, likewise, all seem very interested in blazing some trails, but the results are sometimes uneven.

Friday Roundup: A Busy Week

The Texas Transportation Commission agreed with Dewhurst, the Regional Transportation Council, and most everyone but Cintra that NTTA should handle the 121 Toll Road contract. There may be some discontent over the decision from Cintra, and Cintra will get it anyways if they can't get everything tied up in 45 days, but it looks like a deal is, as they say, a deal.

PBS Democratic Primary Debate: The LiveBlog

7:54 Phew! I was worried there for a bit. The floodgates opened here in North Texas, and we suddenly lost our satellite TV. Beer and politics, hold the politics? I don't think that would make for a very good liveblog. But we've got it back, and we're on! Just in time for the cheesy, cheesy PBS intro.

On The Record: Gerry Birnberg

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Gerry Birnberg, County Chair for the Harris County Democratic Party.

Senator John "Do Nothing" Cornyn (R-Texas)

Apparently Senator Cornyn is having some trouble with the notion of legalizing the approximately 12 million people in the US that currently have no legal status.

Thursday Roundup: The Long And Winding (Toll) Road

The State Highway 121 toll project is a big deal in many circles of Texas government these days. Even though the Texas Transportation Commission says they are "encouraged by the competition," things are getting complicated.

The Trouble With Thompson

Whether you've felt concerned, nauseous, or vindicated by the Washington Post's series on the Cheney Presidency, Sally Quinn has a scenario that is sure to keep you up at night: a GOP revolt leading to Vice President Thompson.

Quick Hits From Sugar Land

Two bits of interesting news this afternoon, both concerning Texas 22nd Congressional District.
