Bill Tracker: SB 601 and 602 – Restricting Actions of Police Organizations

Senator Van de Putte introduced SB 601 and 602. These bills arduously restrict the activities of labor organizations that represent peace officers when and if the labor organization accepts state funding.

SB 602 prohibits a labor organization that represents peace officers from: 1) establishing a political committee, 2) assisting a political committee in performing political activities, and 3) making political contributions or political expenditures IF the labor organization accepts a grant or appropriated money from a state agency.

Maybe Ben Barnes?

Harvey Kronberg has a Buzz™ out that Ben Barnes is being recruited to run for Senate against John Cornyn. Apparently, in recent days there was a meeting of what Kronberg calls "Democratic muckety-mucks" who lobbied Barnes to consider becoming a candidate. Something to think about is found in the Quorum Report subtitle for the story, which was, "Fund raising would not be the issue."

Iowa Thunderdome: When Big Timing It Isn't Enough

I have had vague suspicions that the rock star antics of many primary candidates may play differently in different areas, and this excellent article shows us that Iowa may be a state where Big Timing can backfire.

Monday Roundup: The Message

In the paper this morning, read all about it: proof that Senate Democrats are proactively engaging in message control, in a way that just might work.

On The Record: Brian Pendleton

For this Easter installment of On The Record, I spoke with Brian Pendleton, a Regional Field Director for the Democratic National Committee and the Texas Democratic Party.

Thank you Barbara and Chris!

During my search for mass transit-accessible entry level jobs suitable for somebody with a graduate education but not much paid employment outside of a college campus, I volunteered in several campaign offices. I was attempting to build up both my business skills and job-placement connections.

American Public to Bush: Come Back to Reality and Leave Iraq

President Bush is demanding Congress “come off their vacation” to get their Iraq spending bill to his desk so he can veto it. Yet, has the President ever come off his vacation since invading Iraq four years ago? As disastrously as Bush’s Iraq war has devolved, the evidence inevitably points to no.

Friday Roundup: Hoodwinked and, possibly, Bamboozled

State Representative Sylvester Turner has been making noise lately, and it isn't the kind of noise the House Leadership likes. This Chron article rightly describes Turner as one of "Tom Craddick's Lieutenants" but then illustrates the source of his current frustration. He feels as if he has been "suckered and hoodwinked." He is mad as hell, and apparently may not take it anymore.

Is Obama Running for Vice President?

Right here, today, I'm gonna make this claim: Obama is not ready for this. He will be President someday, but not before he's Vice President first. He's raised an incredible amount of money, but an aggregate of polls seems to indicate that a great deal of that was front-loaded. He is headed the wrong direction to win the nomination, and he is likely to weaken the once invincible Hillary Clinton on his way down. The result will be an open door in Iowa for John Edwards, who starts out with a huge organizational advantage, and then the wheels, as they say, will come off the wagon.

Hillary is No Longer Inevitable

With the late release of Barack Obama’s reports, everyone expected his numbers to be high, but not this high. As you probably already know, he has raised $25 million for the first quarter. $25 million is insanely close to Hillary Clinton’s $26 million, which was still seen as mind-blowing. Considering Howard Dean didn’t reach those types of numbers until September of ’03, the fact that not one, but two, candidates have reached those sort of numbers in the first quarter, shows that this election cycle is going to be more than expensive.
