The Texas Blue: News

Weekend and Monday Roundup Twofer: Afternoon Edition

We'll start the afternoon edition of the roundup with some good news coming out of the TYC debacle — or at least good compared to the situation previously, I suppose. TYC conservator Jay Kimbrough has announced that he expects to release about 400 youth from the program by the end of this week.

In Texas, Lots of Children Left Behind Due to a Lack of Individualized Education

To see if students absorbed classroom lessons, schools across America were given a number of measurement tools. One of the most recently popular is state-standardized assessment programs.

Weekend and Monday Roundup Twofer: Morning Edition

Miss the weekend roundup this Sunday? April Fool's! There wasn't one. Everyone was too busy following the slow trickle of campaign finance reports being released.

On The Record: Ken Molberg

For this installment of On The Record, I spoke with Ken Molberg, the most senior member of the State Democratic Executive Committee and a former Chair of the Dallas County Democratic Party.

Speaking out for a truly free - and effective - Texas media

Concerned about encroachment on free speech in the Lone Star State, Senators Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) and Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) coauthored SB 966. It protects journalists from having to reveal confidential sources unless they were eye witnesses to a crime or somebody's life depends on information from that source.

Baylor: Jesus Loves Us All?

Recently it was brought to my attention by the Baylor College Dems President Alexandra Neville that blatant acts of discrimination occurred on the Baylor Campus Tuesday. Students who travel all over the United States spreading a message of hope and peace to religious students who identify as LGBT, or allies, visited Baylor last Tuesday. Instead of receiving tolerance, the organization known as Soulforce was met with hostility. In addition to the story of the students who witnessed and hosted the gay-rights advocacy group an article can be found in the Baylor newspaper.

Friday Roundup: Paul Burka Knows How To Party

Paul Burka spent most of yesterday doing what he's incredibly good at — covering politics. He wants you to know that he is not a wuss for going to bed. The budget battle went on and on 'til (almost) the break of dawn, and the big (totally not secret!) news is that Rick Noriega proposed an amendment swapping out teacher merit pay for an across-the-board pay raise.

Bill Tracker: HB 364 - Secret Meetings!

HB 364 would grant the right for municipalities to hold "closed" meetings regarding personnel matters. The county government already has the right to these "closed" meetings.

On The Record: Chuck Wiggins

For this installment of On The Record, I spoke with Chuck Wiggins, Brazos County Democratic Party Chair.

The Spectre of Law & Order & Bonzo

If you're like me (and since we're on the internets, I'll assume that you are), you had a nice, tidy little laugh when you heard the GOP kicking around Fred Thompson's name as a possible candidate for President. Surely, I thought to myself, Thompson would never be seriously considered against a McCain or a Giuliani, and no one would take him seriously over the southern gravitas and candor of a Huckabee or even someone silly (and yet formidable!) like Romney.

So imagine my surprise to see, on CNN, that Thompson is running third in a recent USA Today / Gallup poll.
