Compassionate Conservatism: Phil Gramm Is Doing It Wrong

A real asset on the trail, who understands the real problems facing American families and workers:

"You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," he said, noting that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices...

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

"This reminds me of all those bums complaining about Enron. No one ever said it was going to be easy, people! I mean I personally slipped an amendment helping Enron and the mortgage industry to operate in the manner they did into a Senate bill in December 2000. So what that Ken Lay was my 1992 campaign chairman? So what that my wife Wendy was on Enron's Board of Directors from 1992 to 2001? So what that I'm currently a Vice President at UBS?"

"When you want a market omelette sometimes you have break some retirement eggs, whiners!"
