The Texas Blue
Advancing Progressive Ideas

Cutting off noses to spite faces

Managing editors sometimes get into the habit of managing in the background and letting their publication's star writers shine. For better or for worse, I've pretty much done that for the week or so that The Texas Blue has been up. But I feel I have to note one small thing, to perhaps balance some invective being leveled in the blogosphere:

Intentionally running (funding, supporting) a primary opponent against an incumbent Democrat which holds a seat in an area which is at best only marginally blue (which would apply to far too many of our Democrats in the state legislature) is, put simply, political suicide. I'm not sure in which parallel universe it is a "lesser evil" to put Democratic seats in play, and deliberately hijack a recent trend in our direction, for the purpose of punishing those who couldn't bring themselves to cast their vote for a more likeable but equally conservative Speaker of the House. Or who couldn't bring themselves to go back on their word after submitting early pledges. Or who noticed that a couple of Democrats have actually gotten committee assignments under Craddick, whereas Pitts' obvious first order of business had he won would have to be consolidating his Republican base, which would most assuredly NOT include giving committee assignments to D's. Or who perhaps realized that Craddick's lack of popularity helped us win the seats we won, and another two years of that will pay dividends in 2008 -- when we can perhaps run a Democratic candidate for Speaker instead of having to choose the lesser of two evils. Need I continue?

Don't get me wrong -- I like a little hyperbole with my morning coffee. Good for readership, after all. But one can't start saying things like that, because someone's bound to listen. And it's not like any of us actually believe that's honestly a wise course of action... right?

Off with their heads?

It is a knee jerk reaction to want to run Democrats against Democrats based solely on the Speaker vote. While I applaud the Democrat's who stood against Craddick to the end, I understand some of the Democrats who stayed with Craddick, not for personal power, but for the work that needed to be done on a particular committee that they might be seated on.

It is still our primary obligation to get Democrats elected, and win a majority in the House.

Agreed

I think it is more important to actually obtain a Democratic majority in the Legislature before we start eating our own. If we crash the gate, we probably need a gate to crash first. If not, you fall flat on your face.
