Edwards Announces Press Conference Today

Presidential candidate John Edwards has announced that he will hold a press conference today. No details were given as to the subject of the conference. The announcement came late last night, a day after his wife, Elizabeth, saw the doctors monitoring her cancer recovery. Many are concerned that this does not bode well for Elizabeth's health, or for the Edwards campaign. Keep reading; we'll be reporting on the press conference as soon as it happens.

Consider this an open thread: what do you think Edwards has planned for the press conference? What do you think it means for the campaign, and the '08 election cycle?

Where my bets are...

Edwards has always said that before his political career, comes his family. If her health has reached a serious level, I would put my money in the pot that Edwards is out of the race. Though it is heartbreaking for many Edwards lovers like myself, you have to respect a man who puts priority within his family.

Questionable TV News

One of MSNBC's correspondents was just mentioning that apparently, someone had called the Edwards campaign asking if a fundraising meeting that was on later today was still a go, and the campaign had answered that it was going on as planned. Of course, if I were trying to keep a major announcement under wraps (like the Edwards campaign clearly is, and I can't blame them), I would answer the same way.

I'm guessing if Elizabeth's health is in question, Edwards puts a freeze on campaign operations until they know more.

Suspension

The Politico is reporting that a source has informed them that Edwards is suspending the campaign due to Elizabeth experiencing a recurrence of breast cancer. Of course, the Politico has jumped the gun with stories before, but this was pretty much what I was guessing would happen. We'll see.

CNN

CNN can really kill any story. I'm watching right now & the anchor is asking their reporter in Chapel Hill "to give us a sense of the scene."

I just want to yell "LAY OFF ALREADY!"

Presser coming up any minute now.

Questionable

If her health is in bad shape, I would find it hard to run a highly demanding campaign, myself. These situations take lots of time and rest. I would want him to be with his wife, but I will be sad if he's out. I think he has a great chance of winning, he's a great candidate.

Punditry

The MSNBC pundits point out that the last person that would want Edwards to drop out is his wife. They as a whole don't think that Edwards is bowing out.

I'm not sure I agree, of course. But we'll see.

MSNBC Ahead of CNN

MSNBC's coverage is head and shoulders over CNN's right now. CNN is cringe-worthy.

Apparently there's some serious pushback from the Edwards camp on the Politico article.

From the Presser

Cancer in her rib. "No longer curable, but completely treatable."

"The campaign goes on, it goes on strongly."

"The Campaign Goes On"

I've never been so pleased to say that I was wrong. What a great representaion of an American family that truly cares about the future of this country. It's unfortunate to hear the results of Mrs. Edwards' condition, but you have to respect a woman that will stand that strong next to her husband.
