It's an Elephant Eat Elephant World

Democratic members and activists should take note of how enjoyable it is to watch Republicans eat their own. Remember this, because Republicans surely receive just as much or more enjoyment watching Democrats do the same.

As for Republicans' recent cannibalistic activities, conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt is creating a MoveOn.org-esque group called the Victory Caucus. This group will be used to target the 17 Republicans who voted for the Democratic House resolution opposing President Bush's troop increase. Bill Kristol also shot one over their bow, stating, "There's something called primaries we have in America, and there will be primary challenges in the Republican Party against some of those congressmen... and they deserve to be primaried, because they are acting, I think, in a shameful way."

What is most astounding is that I'm sure these 17 Republicans are receiving a tremendous amount of pressure from their districts to vote for the resolution. The writing is on the wall. Nevertheless, Republican activists are coalescing not to resolve the disaster that is Iraq, but to punish members listening to their constituents.

I say again to my fellow Democratic colleagues: remember how absurd this looks, and how much of a joy it is to watch. We must be careful not to make these same mistakes.
