Libertarian Candidate: Bob Barr
Mon, 05/26/2008 - 12:00pm

And proof once more that Libertarians are Republicans without the social agenda. Wait. Some do have a social agenda too. So...wouldn't that just make them all Republicans?
I've heard them described as "Republicans with a sex life",

but that's not really fair. The Libertarian Party seems to have two distinct wings. There are the social Libertarians who care most about individual freedoms and constitutional government, and the economic Libertarians who care most about cutting taxes and cutting taxes. The economic Libertarians dominate the national party, are most of the candidates for office, and (thankfully!) draw votes away from Republicans. But there are a lot of social Libertarians at the grass-roots level.
When I ran for Congress in 2004, the Libertarian candidate was Robert Fritsche, who agreed with me on about half the issues, who staked out unusual positions on the other half, and who agreed with Republican Mike McCaul on almost nothing.
