McCain Pulls A VP Deke

Looks like McCain's running mate won't be who you think it is. EDIT: But it looks like we know who that will be.

It seems that neither Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty nor former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will be McCain's vice presidential pick, as various sources indicate that neither will be heading to meet McCain in Dayton, Ohio for his press appearance today. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has sprung up as a dark horse possibility, as a private jet from Alaska arrived in Dayton last night.

EDIT: Multiple sources are now confirming from Republican sources the selection of Gov. Palin as McCain's running mate.

Palin's Literally An Overnight Phenomenon

I don't think it's even a matter of Palin coming from the back of the pack to take the lead amongst the Republican veep possibilities; she wasn't even in the race until the last 24 hours! Intrade has contracts for Palin up 86% in the last 24 hours with Romney down 66.9% and Pawlenty down 20.5%.

unbelieveable! She has been a relief!

Thanks,

Thrilled with Palin

I was so torn & undecided until McCain made this pick. It will very interesting to see where the election is in 1 week from now. I will definitely be watching the Repub Convention. I have been going more conservative over the last 3 years and feel it's the right direction for me to go personally, so Palin is a blessing from above, IMO. The Democratic Party gives away too many tax dollars. Bush was horrible, however, I'm not holding the whole Repub Party responsible for his actions.

Democrats, Republicans

I am curious about your reasoning, unchainthedogs. You say that the Democratic Party gives away too many tax dollars in one sentence, and then in your next sentence you say that you're not holding the whole Republican Party responsible for President Bush's actions.

I'm trying to wrap my head around why all Democrats give away too many of your tax dollars yet not all Republicans are responsible for supporting George W. Bush. All Democrats=tax giveaway yet all Republicans=not responsible for the guy they've been in lockstep behind for the last 8 years? I can name you way more Democrats who are conservative when it comes to taxes and spending (the whole Blue Dog Coalition, for example) than I can Republicans who have disavowed George W. Bush, his failed leadership and his failed policies (Lincoln Chaffee, Jim Jeffries).

It was a Democratic Congress that gave those millions of us in the middle class a tax break. If the Republicans had still been running the Legislative Branch, the tax break would have gone to the rich, not to people who needed it. How is fighting for middle class and blue collar Americans getting a tax break giving away tax dollars versus lining the pockets of the rich? I would ten times rather my tax dollars go to someone who needs it rather than someone who'll use it to buy a third or fourth home. How is a platform that gets us out of Iraq responsibly (thus ending the crushing financial obligations the war brings to the table) giving away tax dollars compared to John McCain's "100 years or whatever it takes" endless commitment to continuing the war?

Unfortunately, one week from today, I'm afraid we're all going to be looking at the aftermath of why New Orleans is still in such danger from a major hurricane and why we've lost yet more of the vital buffer provided by the bayous and coastal wetlands of Louisiana.

Whispers and Rumors

Scuttlebutt has it that McCain really wanted Joe Lieberman as his VP, but when the Republican hierarchy blew a gasket over that, McCain essentially snubbed them all by going with an almost complete unknown.
