On The Record: Gayle Ledbetter

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Gayle Ledbetter, Chair of the Johnson County Democratic Party.

How did you get started in politics? Did you come to it in your youth or later on?

I received a phone call probably 26 years ago and asked if I wanted to work in elections. That is how I got started in Johnson County politics.

How do state politics affect your neighborhood?

My county is the home of State Representative Arlene Wohlgemuth. We have a lot to overcome because of her part in state politics.

Do you have any ambition for higher office? Do you have plans to run for any other party office, or possibly even public office?

I ran against Arlene for her State Representative seat and lost in 1998. Congressman Chet Edwards beat her during redistricting in 2004 and made me very happy.

Who are some of your political heroes?

Lyndon Johnson is a political hero for me, because he really understood Texans and had a big heart; not to mention the many other contributions he made to our society.

What advice would you give to young people just getting into politics?

You definitely have to have thick skin, but remember that it can be a lot of fun, too.

What one thing would you say a political organization never has enough of?

Time, money and volunteers; you can take your pick.

What was your personal progression from the role of activist to the Johnson County Democratic Party Chair?

I was heading up the Johnson County Democratic Women’s group and we were the backbone of the Party. It was a natural transition for me to take over the position when the Chair stepped down.

NATURAL TRANSITION

So who did you stab in the back during this natual transition? Smokymountains
