Virtual Fence More Virtual Than Expected

More problems are arising for the Bush administration's ill-advised border security implementation, as the "virtual fence" project is being scaled back after the pilot project in Arizona ran into technical difficulties.

The radar systems were suffering from false alarms, the inability to process large amounts of data, and poor reslution at the expected distances.

Moreover, as development occurred with little input from the Border Patrol, the pilot system is effectively unusable. GAO Homeland Security director Richard Stana acknowledged that "the project's design will not be used as the basis for future... development."

The GAO also said that the physical fence project may also be delayed, and that it could not determine the project's total cost.

just say no to fence

I heard yesterday that the proposed fence would run right through the campus of UT Brownsville. Reminds me of my 1986 visit to then divided Berlin. But this is not socialist communist reds we are talking about. This is our neighbor, supposedly a democracy, though mostly de facto one party. If the politicians had not lied to us (U.S.), a true free trade zone would look more like the European Union where border crossings from country to country are more akin to crossing the Red River into Oklahoma and back, not the Rio Grande or Rio Bravo depending on if one is traveling south bound or north bound. The EU countries also enjoy much more economic parity from country to country as well.
