What's Happening in Youth Politics?

Convention season is officially upon us. It is that time of the year when officers are elected, resolutions are passed, rules are made and broken, and maybe even a party or two gets thrown. All in all, young people meet and mingle with other young people to discuss how to be more effective leaders of their local and state democratic organizations.

The Young Democrats of America are holding their National Convention in Dallas, Texas this year, and it is sure to be a great week with tons of speakers, training sessions, and socialization.

The convention will run from July 18-21, and key speakers will include Sen. John Edwards, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, Jim Hightower, Christopher Nowinski, Carl Pope, Susan Turnbull, and Jon Soltz.

The College Democrats of America will be in Columbia, South Carolina at The University of South Carolina for their National Convention, and it also promises to be a must-attend event.

Their convention will be from July 26-29, and speakers for that will include Sen. John Edwards, Sen. Barak Obama, Sen. Mike Gravel, Chairman Howard Dean, and Congressman James Clyburn.

Nowinski

In case nobody knows who he is, he is a former WWE wrestler (from MTV's first Tough Enough competition) and Harvard graduate. He currently works for them as the face of "Smackdown Your Vote".

If you think wrestling fans are dumb and won't vote, it amazes me how many people actually register to vote when they hold those events. I volunteered once in Fayetteville NC. We were given a table at the entrance to the arena. All we had were some free buttons. We had people coming to us left and right, mainly because of the free buttons. But I believe we registered 30 new voters in about an hour.
