Saying Bayh to Regional Election Returns

Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana provides the latest Hillary Clinton campaign endorsement. The endorsement of a former Democratic Leadership Council chair is significant for several reasons.

Bayh himself once toyed with running for the White House, like his father had in 1976 against Carter. Partnering on improving Traumatic Brain Injury treatment for military veterans and expanded community service opportunities, these two seem like the natural pair.

From 2001 to 2005, Evan served as the chair of the DLC. Its 'third way' promotes the voices of fiscal and social moderates within the Democratic party. I concede it’s a particularly helpful strategy in municipalities and states which are not yet solidly blue. Indiana is currently described as being the 'reddest of the red' whether we're talking economic and/or social issues. And mobilizing Democrats in that state is most certainly within the DLC's purview.

Amazingly, Hillary is still being portrayed in some circles as one of those ‘New York’ types. Since Goldwater, the far right has conjured up fears of ‘difference’. Voters get riled up and scared into voting against Democrats solely based on an inaccurate stereotype.

Never mind that a 2008 GOP candidate himself is both from New York and has governed one of those so-called ‘liberal’ cities! Stereotypes cloud up reality rather effectively. Serving together on the Senate Armed Services committee, Bayh regularly sees Hillary’s effectiveness for himself.

Bayh’s name is being floated around as a potential Vice Presidential candidate, provided Clinton wins the nomination. I don't know about this, but from what I've seen, I am impressed with Bayh's record. Promoting the importance of responsible fatherhood is his most famous initiative. It’s also one very few people are publicly able to attack.

Say goodbye to a regional blue/red state mentality. We're taking it all in 2008.
