The Texas Blue: News

Shapiro Explores

Republican State Senator Florence Shapiro of Plano announced that she's going to explore taking over Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison's seat after KBH leaves to do whatever she ends up doing, which is a departure set for 2012 or sooner. (You can count on sooner.)

Some Uncomfortable Questions

I am a big fan of Henry Waxman, and I specifically enjoy his work on the House Oversight committee. I knew that Homeland Security, as the newest department in town, was going through some growing pains, but I didn't expect it to become a focal point for Waxman at any time in the near future. And yet, yesterday's news tells us that is precisely what's happening in the wake of a cash-for-access scheme being uncovered.

Fundraising: You're Doing It Right(!)

Chris Turner just sent this out, in re: the piles of money he raised through June:

...when we file our campaign finance report with the Texas Ethics Commission tomorrow, we will report having raised over $200,000 in the first six months of this year!

I encourage you to listen to our interview with Chris and visit his campaign website.

Contempt Charges for Karl Rove?

Karl Rove ignored a congressional subpoena last Thursday, refusing to appear before a judiciary subcommittee. As lawmakers waited to question him over the politically motivated firings of US Attorneys. Karl Rove, conveniently enough, was not even in the United States.

Offshore Drilling Ban to be Lifted

President Bush is going to terminate the executive ban on drilling for oil off the shores of the United States today. That alone isn't enough to get this party started, as Congress still has to decide to undo its own prohibition of the practice. Read all about it here.

The NRCC Doesn't Know Who You're Voting For

If you're on the NRCC mailing list, you received this email today. It seems as if they aren't sure which presidential candidate their supporters will choose. Full text of the email after the jump.

The GOP and Viagra

Bob Dole did some ads for Viagra, but the very mention of the product (or questions about health care policy) has the potential for making John McCain look very, very uncomfortable:

BREAKING: McCain Leads!

Senator John McCain does have one indisputable lead in his race with Senator Barack Obama for the White House. It's just not a lead that he's going advertise, nor one I imagine we'll hear much about from his cheerleading corps in the media. John McCain is the most absent Senator in the 110th Congress, having missed 61.8% of the votes so far. To put that in perspective, Senator Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota), who took several months off to recover from a brain hemorrhage, has voted more often than John McCain.

A Court Date, Quickly

Wendy Davis' call for a speedy court date in the rehashed lawsuit brought against her state senate candidacy by opponent Kim Brimer was heard: the Throwdown Showdown will take place on July 22. My prediction: I think this isn't going to go so well for Brimer.

The Polar Bears Can Wait

The Bush administration (despite pressure from everyone, even the recently stacked Supreme Court) has no plans to do anything about the environment for the rest of Bush's term. The EPA will instead throw open the doors of the process to the people and hear multiple months of public comment on whether they should, you know, do stuff about the environment or just generally let it slide.
